Called to be Saints:  Not Superheroes

This is the theme of our upcoming Lenten Parish Mission to be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton March 24-26.  Our mission speak is Fr. Bryce Sibley, a priest of the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana.   He was ordained to the priesthood in the year 2000. He is currently serving as pastor and chaplain of Our Lady of Wisdom Church and Catholic Student Center on the Campus of the University of Louisiana - Lafayette.

All we do in Lent is to help us grow in holiness, to be closer to our Lord…to be saints.  Sometimes we think that is impossible, we are not Mother Teresa or St. Vincent de Paul.  We will never leave all we have and go to a foreign land and hopefully we will not be martyred for our faith.  Here’s the good news, we are hard wired for sainthood.  I’ll repeat that, we are hard wired for sainthood.  We are created in the image and likeness of God, and through grace, God gives us a share in His own divine life.  This life of holiness is what we are longing for, even if we don’t know it.

St. Augustine knew this when he said, “My heart is restless Lord, until it rests in you.”  St. Augustine, one of the early Church Fathers is a great example for us.  He resisted conversion, spend his younger life “being bad” and enjoying it.  He even fathered a child out of wedlock.  His mother, St. Monica, a faithful follower of Christ prayed for him and never gave up loving him and telling him the Truth. Eventually grace and a mother’s love won over a wayward son to Jesus Christ.  Augustine, like many of us, was looking for love in all the wrong places.  The world offered many distractions that Augustine seized with gusto, but in the end he was left empty and still searching for fulfillment and happiness.  When he finally submitted to grace and truth, he found his fulfillment in the last place he expected it, in the heart of Jesus Christ.

Sometimes we think it would be easier to become a superhero than a saint.  Not true.  If we are baptized, the super power we need is already in us.  Come and find yours.

Fr. Sibley will speak at all of the Seton Masses March 22nd and 23rd.  The Mission talks will be given twice each day March 24th, 25th and 26th.  The morning session will begin after the 8:00am Mass with a continental breakfast; the evening session will be at 7:00pm and last about one hour.
